DIFI recently collaborated with Plan International Indonesia to develop an impactful education module on Gender and Climate Action for the Youth Leadership Academy (YLA). YLA is an initiative funded by The Rockefeller Foundation and executed by Plan International Indonesia, that is committed to empowering young people, especially young women, to lead and influence change in climate adaptation. Through this initiative, youth leaders were supported by the tools, knowledge, and skills necessary to become agents of change in their communities.
As a learning partner, DIFI brought its expertise in curriculum development and youth engagement and began the process by listening and understanding the aspirations of the YLA program and the unique perspectives of its young leaders. The goal was not only to inform, but also to create a learning experience that is both practical and transformative.
The module was designed around three core pillars that support holistic growth:
- Youth Power: Recognize and realize their potential, be confident, celebrate diversity, and believe in themselves;
- Youth Unlimited: Strengthening their understanding of climate education, including climate action, climate justice, policy, and decision making, and turning knowledge into actions; and
- Youth Speak up: Voicing their concerns and interests on gender and climate action at both regional and global level to influence decision-making and be the voice for the voiceless.
DIFI’s process ensured that every component of the curriculum has a purpose. By first understanding the needs and motivations of the youth leaders to build a compelling learning journey, the team was able to gather deep insights. These insights were then carefully synthesized, forming the foundation of the module’s content and structure to ensure a relevant and engaging learning experience that supports individual growth and collective action.
The final product was a dynamic and accessible module that served as a compass for young climate leaders, empowering them to speak up, take action, and lead with confidence to create a more equitable and sustainable future.
The module is now available for download in English, Bahasa Indonesia, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese. Click bit.ly/YLA-Modules to explore how young people can take action for climate and gender justice.
